Interestingly, in the 19th century, the Portuguese royal family preferred to spend summer in the city of a beautiful microclimate. Even today, the street is not as crowded as nearby Lisbon.

One of the city's central attractions is a citadel, which was designed in the 16th century to protect the coast. Today, it is more of an architectural pearl than a functional structure.
