Experience Description

Portugal's religious center, Fatima, is one hour's drive from Lisbon. On May 13, 1917, three young shepherds from the area saw the Virgin Mary here. The Virgin appeared to them on the 13th of the month for over six months. These events culminated in the Miracle of the Sun on October 13th of the same year.

This shrine, which offers a number of services and welcomes visitors to its buildings, was constructed on the precise spot where the Virgin appeared to the shepherds. Initially built in 1919, the Chapel of the Apparition is said to be located precisely where the Virgin first appeared. The Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary, finished in 1953, was inspired by the Vatican and embraces emotion. Located on the other side of Our Lady of the Rosary, Holy Trinity Basilica is a contemporary building that can accommodate up to 10,000 people for a ceremony. Come with us and learn why this site, named after the Muslims, is now a Catholic pilgrimage site by joining us here at the Sanctuary.
