Experience Description
Join us on a journey to the place where three local young shepherds witnessed the Virgin Mary. The apparition took place on May 13, 1917, and after that, the Virgin appeared to them on the same date every month for the following six months. The last event, which occurred on October 13 of the same year, is called the Miracle of the Sun.
This Sanctuary, which welcomes visitors from all over the world nowadays, was constructed on the precise spot where the Virgin appeared to the shepherds. Join us on a trip to this Sanctuary and nearby Valinhos, the birthplace of little shepherds, to discover why Fatima is one of the most significant Catholic pilgrimage sites and was named after a Muslim.
The next stop of our trip is a walled village called Obidos, just one hour north of Lisbon. The human records kept in this region date back to pre-Roman times. However, the period of development and prosperity of Obidos is connected with the Roman and Moorish eras. Romans highly evaluated Obidos, located on a hill overlooking the surrounding area, had an excellent defensive position and expanded it. Because merchants had rested here and the settlement was safe, it grew.
In the middle of the 11th century, Afonso I of Portugal conquered Obidos to the Moorish, and the city's construction went to another level. Celtic temples were transformed into churches, and parts of the wall were pulled down to provide more space and safety for houses. Let’s walk down the ancient streets, taste a Ginjinha, and start an exploration.
