Once in Elvas, we are going to see the ancient aqueduct that used to supply water to its inhabitants. But the main attraction and focus of our interest is the Fortress of Elvas, a marvelous star-shaped fortification that was used for defense purposes.

After the fortress of Elvas, we will have some free time. It is the ideal spot to have lunch and buy some local pastries. Our next place of visit is the Church of Our Lady of Assumption. This Old Cathedral of Elvas is a religious building, located in Republic Square, and is a great example of the Manuelino architecture.

Finally, it’s time to see the example of military architecture in Portugal – the Fortress of Our Lady of Grace! The fortress of Elvas and the Fortress of Santa Luzia have earned the town multiple prizes in military architecture and have also earned the status of a World Heritage Site, protected by UNESCO.
