The Palacio Nacional da Vila was created as a home for the Moorish Kalifas and expanded over the centuries by Portuguese kings, who modernized it with Gothic and Manuelino architectural elements.

This palace grew over the ages due to the expansions made in connection with the hunting hobby that most monarchs enjoyed. Cooler summertime temperatures and its proximity to Lisbon, the country's capital, also made Sintra a popular location.
