Thank you, OneDayTours, for an adventure I'll never forget. Together with my husband we booked an experience to the iconic surfing sport of Portugal, combined with the most popular coastal cities, Peniche and Nazare, and got a great opportunity to see Portugal off the beaten paths. Don't miss your chance to try it!

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to visit Evora?

Like the rest of Portugal, Evora enjoys good weather throughout, and you can plan to visit at any time of the year. You should, however, schedule your summer visits to be in the mornings, as sometimes the temperatures can be high in the afternoons. Remember to also pack and dress according to the weather. You may want to bring some warm clothing during the cold months and bring along an umbrella during the rainy season.

What is special about Evora?

Evora is a UNESCO World Heritage city and was a royal residence for long periods of time during the Middle Ages. This explains the presence of the many medieval buildings including the Roman-era walls in the city, which showcase Evora’s ancient architectural prowess and give you a glimpse of what life was like in the past. Evora is also a cultural center with several museums showcasing various items on the culture of the people who inhabited the city since the beginning.

How much time should you spend in Evora?

To get ample time to see all the attractions, spend two to three days exploring Evora. This should be enough time to move around the whole city. One day will not be enough, while spending more than three days will be overstretching the visit. There are many attractions and you need to spend ample time on each to better appreciate them and make the most out of your trip.

Is Evora walkable?

Yes, you can walk around the city and experience it first-hand. Cars are mostly parked outside the city, and then you can enter the city on foot through one of its gates and, among other things, walk around the ancient city walls. This is the only way you will get to appreciate the different styles used to construct it and see the alterations that have been made over the years.

How safe is Evora?

There are no major security risks in Evora. But like any other places receiving tourists, there may be cases of petty crimes like snatching or car break ins, but these are rare and far in between. Make sure you are always aware of your surroundings, while also avoiding secluded places at all times. It is also advisable to make copies of your travel documents just in case you lose your originals.

What dishes are a must-try in Evora?

Evora is known for its traditional Alentejo cuisine. This mainly rotates around bread, meat, and olive oil. You must taste their delicious bread and pork, bread and lamb, and bread and seafood delicacies. These traditionally made bread and meat stews are just out-of-this-world and tourists can't just get enough of them and keep coming back for more. Being a wine region you can't also miss sampling appreciating the locally produced wine.
