Baleal
Baleal island in Portugal is a place with a rich surfing history and numerous opportunities for watersports.
Baleal got its name from the original Portuguese “Balea”, which means “a whale”. In the Middle Ages period, it was the center of whale hunting, traditional for this area. In the period of 15th and 16th centuries, the entire bay from Peniche to Atouguia da Baleia was heavily clogged with silt. As a result, the whale meat was dragged into the bay of Atouguia da Baleia. Whale hunting was prohibited a long time ago, but the name is kept till our time. Nowadays, Baleal beach is mostly associated with surfing and other types of watersports activities. The history of Baleal surfing dates back to 1965. That time a few English surfers traveled around, stopped in this area to try the wave, and got an amazing experience.
The area, located in the close vicinity to Peniche, is windy almost any time of the year, as for the choice of spots for surfing, it's huge, and among options can be found variants for both beginners and professionals. The best waves for experienced surfers here are from autumn to spring. The rest of the time it is a paradise for beginners. The distance to Peniche is only 5km, and the whole coastline 15 kilometers north and south of these spots offers a choice of surf schools with a high level of service. Among the names of surf spots, highly evaluated by famous surfers, should be mentioned Cantinho da Baía, Lagide, and Molhe Leste. Several times per year the Atlantic ocean turns the peninsula into an isolated island under the influence of two sea currents, which run against each other.
The whole history of modern Baleal is tightly connected with surfing. No big surprise, that the main attractions for this area are also connected with Baleal surf spots. The first surfing school was founded here in 1993. Baleal Surf School with Baleal Surf Camp are located right on the island, and well known all over the world. Today the island is the real surfers’ mecca.
Still, there are some historic and architectural spots that deserve attention and visiting. The Chapel of Santo Estevão is a small church, dated to the 16th. According to the legend, it was built by the fishermen as a symbol of respect for the God whom they worshiped. The interior is quite typical of the Portuguese architectural style of that time. The walls are covered with Azulejo tiles from the 17th-18th centuries.
One more famous historical artifact is the remains of the fort, which was built by the French in 1808 for protection reasons against the attacks of British troops. But this fort was not built to an end. Basically, the island was not a good spot for this purpose as there was no water. The Balea Fountain was built in 1861 and stayed the only source of drinking water until 1965.
To get a full impression of this coastal gem of Portugal, it's recommended to try surfing or just walk by one of the numerous beaches, and then sit in one of the open-terraced cafes with a panoramic ocean view.
