Experience Description
Join a local guide on a walking tour that will fill your senses and enjoy delicious food and drinks in 12 tastings. Visit centuries-old pastry shops, hidden family-run gems, food markets, and the amazing views of secret rooftops. Walk through the streets of Baixa, Chiado, and Bairro Alto, arriving at the riverbank where the old Mercado da Ribeira, now Time Out Market, opens the doors to the scents of the fish and fresh fruits and vegetables. Savor cheese and Iberian ham, pastel de bacalhau (codfish cake), ginjinha (cherry liqueur), bifana (pork sandwich), beer, traditional Portuguese sweets, delicious espresso coffee, and 3 different wine tastings. Let’s start the day at Praça da Figueira, one of the main squares of Lisbon Baixa, the 18th century downtown area of our capital. We begin our tastings with a delicious cheese and Iberian ham board that goes perfectly well with a chalice of Port Wine, Portugal’s most famous fortified wine. To digest, we will walk uphill, passing by the iconic Santa Justa Elevator and walking through the busy streets of Chiado area, until we arrive at Carmo Square. We take a break while enjoying a refreshing cold glass of Vinho Verde (green wine), a very light wine from the north of Portugal, that pairs up amazingly with fish, seafood or…just by itself, while enjoying the views of the city. After regaining our energy, let’s head down towards our Tejo river and visit Time Out Market. The old Mercado da Ribeira was renovated and turned into a gourmet foodcourt, but still preserves the old area where, everyday, fresh fruits and vegetables, meat and fresh fish are displayed and sold to the locals. To end this experience, we will sink our teeth into a tasteful bifana and drink a cold portuguese beer. With our bellies full, we enter the old fishing neighborhoods, and there is no better place to try our traditional Pastel de Bacalhau (codfish cake) than a family-run grocery store, right at the heart of this fishing area. While at it, let’s enjoy a cold Ginjinha, our cherry liqueur, to sweeten our senses. After passing by Praça do Comércio and Rua Augusta, and while of the sweets theme, we stop at a 19th century pastry shop, to try three typical portuguese sweets, none of them being the Pastel de Nata you see everywhere, and nothing better than an expresso coffee to pair it up with. To finish in style, let’s enjoy a secret rooftop while having a freshly cold glass of Portuguese white wine. When this tour is over, we guarantee you will feel a little bit more portuguese...and maybe a little bit heavier as well ;)
