Frequently Asked Questions
How many days do you need to see Setubal?
If you want to explore and enjoy all parts of Setubal, your best stay is intended to be 2 to 3 days. Within one day you can explore the must-see historical attractions; the magnificent Convento de Jesus, the Forte de Sao Filipe to admire awe-inspiring views, and the old town with its beautifully laid out, cobblestone streets and squares. Having an extra day of exploration you could dedicate more time to the local history, go to the Livramento Market, and maybe take a boat trip on the Sado River and to the dolphin’s reserve. You also have time to visit the Arrabida Natural Park and, if you wish, to rest on the beautiful beaches in the region for 2 to 3 days.
Can you do Setubal as a day trip?
I want to mention that, of course, Setubal is quite good for a day trip. In one day it is possible to visit the main attractions including the Convento de Jesus or Jesus Convent, the historical Forte de São Filipe, and the Old Town. A trip to Livramento Market or a quick boat excursion on the Sado River is also possible. A day will afford a general feel of the city but is inadequate to get a feel of the richness of cultures and history available. To understand all the areas and get more experience it will be better to spend more time in Setúbal and travel around all the interesting points.
What is the best way to get around Setubal?
Practically it is more suitable to move through the city on foot particularly if you are interested in the old town and most of the tourist attractions. The city is relatively small and most of the places like Convento de Jesus, the pedestrian area and most markets are easily within walking distance. If going further or to reach Arrabida Natural Park, a car is required which can be hired, or a taxi can be taken. Others are public transport like the buses which are also available and could take one to more attractions within the area. Cycling or scooting also provides a pleasant way of navigating the city and its surroundings and could also be a rental service.
Can you explore Setubal by yourself?
Indeed, it is quite nice to wander around Setúbal independently. The city is very friendly for solo travelers because it is well-planned, well-signed, and secure to move around in. Most of the tourist attractions including Convento de Jesus and the historic areas can be easily located and additional brochures regarding the tourists’ sites of interest are provided in English. If one wants to know the historical and cultural facts of those places, there are booklets available or in some of the areas, it is possible to get audio guides for rent.
What is the best day of the week to visit Setubal?
Visiting the Setubal usually takes place between Tuesday and Thursday since the establishment may be closed during the weekend. Every place and every restaurant that is visited during these are not as full as one would expect it to be during other days, so it is comparatively fun to be out during them. Especially, during weekends the visited areas and the markets are overcrowded and there may be a high queue for a time in a particular place. Weekend tourist thing is also an addition, going to the city during the weekdays is way more relaxing and calming than trying to do it on the weekend.
